Short Volume

Track reported short-sale volume by day and venue, and compare it with total reported volume.

Short Volume shows reported short-sale transactions by venue and day.

Read the daily ratio

The latest summary divides reported short-sale volume by total reported volume and compares the result with its 30-day average. A higher ratio means that more of the day's reported volume was marked short.

Short volume counts transactions. It does not measure shares that remain sold short after the session. Use Short Interest for that position data.

Compare the latest short-volume ratio with its 30-day average.

Compare venues over time

Percent modes divide each venue's short volume by the day's total reported volume. The stack therefore adds up to the day's short-volume ratio, not 100%. Volume modes show the number of reported short-sale shares.

Choose 1 day, 1 week, or 1 month aggregation. The Short Volume by Venue chart indicator provides the same venue breakdown below a price chart.

Create a Short Volume alert

Create Alert starts with the current symbol. Add up to three conditions using total or venue-level short percentage, short volume, reported volume, or exempt activity. Conditions can watch a threshold, a crossing, or a percentage metric relative to its recent-report average.

The latest finalized report seeds a new or edited alert. Later reports are evaluated once after the source data is complete.

Choose a reported short-volume metric and the comparison to apply to each new report.

Choose the table denominator

Short Volume shows reported short-sale shares. Short % of Total divides each venue's short volume by total reported volume. Short % of Exchange divides a venue's short volume by that venue's reported volume.

Venue reporting coverage differs from consolidated market volume. Compare values that use the same source and denominator.

See Access and Limits for the earliest available history.

The table can show shares, percent of total volume, or percent of each venue's volume.
