I’m on the other side of this trade. Their 2026 guidance was built around $4 jet fuel and more than $4 billion in added fuel expense. During the war spot fuel prices hit $4.88, and it’s $3.09 today.
Because AAL runs on razor thin margins any drop in fuel is an enormous boon to the bottom line.
But what does the math say. For every 5% it’s roughly $3 a gallon fuel forecast falls it lifts EPS at Delta, Southwest, and United by 10% to 15%, and at American close to $50.
American gets five times the earnings torque of its rivals from the same drop of fuel.
Yes, this is a more speculative play but I’m taking the other side of this trade. I’m doing covered calls CC Jan 27 $25.
