Multiple years of losses. That’s when I sell. That’s how I said goodbye to SJM and VZ (and VZ dividends were really good).
But anything that does well after two years, and by that I mean they’re not priced lower than my cost basis, I tend to keep.
Tax loss harvesting is there for a reason. But when harvesting losses, I also take the opportunity to trim any positions that I want to profit from (individual stock, I keep my index funds as is).

Yes. But I have a person who delves into the 10K/Q documents and researches dividend history as well as balance sheets. An old Goldman Sachs dude who burned out and now just day trades (well, it’s not that simple but let’s just assume that for the sake of this comment).
I’m a long-term investor and the individual stocks he recommended have really done quite well. But there were some misses, too (VZ, SJM).
I have long term positions in stuff like GS, MMM, C, SPG… stuff that did really bad early on and it took a solid two, three years to gain traction. Re-invested dividends and came out the other side.
I’ve since simplified to just index funds. I cash out the dividends and aggressively buy the SP500 index now.
