Got it. Cut welfare, and we will have less inflation.
I hope Trump stops SNAP, SS, Medicare and Medicaid.

The problem with sin tax is that is has very small effects on consumption compared to the increase in cost. Poor people continue to buy because they want to then just end up poorer. Cigarettes and, wait for it, soda, are prime examples.
My state has no sales tax on non-hot food products that aren’t from a restaurant, but does have sales tax on “soft drinks.” That’s effectively an 8% sin tax and it hasn’t slowed consumption. The younger generation may smoke, drink alcohol, and consume soda less (last one I haven’t seen data on), but that’s absolutely a societal change not effectuated in any major part by sin tax.
To be clear, I don’t think that limiting SNAP benefits to be used on actual food instead of milkshakes, twinkies, and mountain dew is the same as a sin tax because it’s government money being spent.

Yeah sucks when you let one go early. Most of my gains this year were on GOOG, AMD and UNH. I also swing traded SNAP quite a bit.
Google with by far the most gains. Went pretty hard into leaps when it was around 160 ish. AMD I held all the way down to - 90% and then sold at 100% when it hit 180 lol... Could have definitely held a little longer, but profits are profits. Especially after that wild ride lmao.

Just to clarify, most forms of public assistance are in the form of SNAP (food stamps), reduced cost housing, reduced cost health care (medicaide), unemployment benefits, and maybe in some jurisdictions utility bill relief. People receiving actual cash is exceedingly rare.

Still plenty of unhealthy SNAP options, fren, you will have to control the poors more to meet your fact.

Dear Diary,
I haven’t had soda since the start of the year when it was removed it from SNAP. This is especially cruel because I am poor, overweight, and live in West Virginia - three conditions that legally require at least one Mountain Dew a day.
If this keeps up, I might lose weight and gain self-respect, none of which I asked for. Pray for me.

I don't know. Eggs are kind of a luxury though. You sure we want the poors eating eggs? /s
I joke though. I'm fine banning sugary garbage like cakes, candies, cookies, etc. I use sugar all the time to make pancakes, muffins, waffles, oatmeal, porridge, grits, etc. and that's just for breakfast.
I wrote what I wrote originally thinking that they were banning bulk sugar. Which sounded insane because sometimes you need sugar to coax kids into eating a good meal. Well-fed kids are well-behaved kids. Well-behaved kids pay better attention in school and cause less distractions in school which is also to the benefit of other kids that aren't on SNAP. Kids who do better in school grow up to be adults that are more likely to wait to have kids they can afford. Everyone benefits in the long run except the taxpayers of today, who hopefully see the wisdom in society planting trees whose shade they will never enjoy.

US doing capital controls for welfare recipients
> Bessent: "For individuals who want to wire money out of the country, they're gonna have to tick a box whether they are or are not on public assistance. Then we're going to start pushing over the coming days and weeks that if you're on public assistance, you cannot wire money out of the country."

Not totally clear what "public assistance" means but Claude says SNAP is 41.7 million people. If it also includes Medicaid that's another 67 million (partly overlapping with the snap recipients).
That's quite a lot of people who may suddenly need crypto, I wonder if there's anything we should be doing to help them find out how to do it and how to avoid getting scammed.

If the guidelines of SNAP are distasteful enough, one can simply spend their own money on their own vices.

The problem is this government only wants to dictate to the poor on what they can consume. If the federal government rolled a nationwide sugar tax tomorrow, conservatives would be losing their shit over it. Even if it's just as "educational" for them as it is for anyone on SNAP. That is to say I don't think the goal here is to actually help the health of the average SNAP user, but rather punish people on SNAP.

Why? Its only the United Shitholes of America that have to provide SNAP for the people. In Europe we can afford to eat.

You are correct. Why not utilize the SNAP benefits as a form of education of the terrible “food” products that should be avoided?

It's more to do with being poor than SNAP. It just so happens that most everyone on SNAP is poor. But if you looked at low income demographic as a whole, SNAP or not, you'd find higher rates of health related diseases like diabetes.

How do you think they are removing soda from SNAP. Same thing. Frozen waffles shouldn't be subsidized by taxpayer.

Instead of stupid work requirements why don't we offer nutrition and cooking classes so people can learn how to cook better with their SNAP. Government could help subsidize Farmers Markets and Neighborhood Co-ops and Gardens for better food access.

> The fact that people on SNAP getting soda is even being argued about
Probably because sugar-based soda is unhealthy, which leads to obesity and health issues that society pays for.
Now what if this wasn't about the budget (this doesn't reduce any benefits) and is about health (it prevents buying candy and sugar soda with SNAP)

You are paying for the roads. Whether it's through your taxes in the states general fund, the extra taxes you pay at the pump, or the extra registration you pay for driving an ev. Given the fact that you are paying for them, I wouldn't criticize you for wanting that money to actually go towards the roads and I doubt you'd be ok with it being used for more billboards along side of them instead.
Soda is great, but the point of SNAP is nutritional assistance. Soda does not fit in that category, neither does alcohol or tobacco, and rightfully so.

The people paying the bill definitely get a say in what works for those families.
I absolutely 1000% want my tax dollars to pay for poor people to eat. But I don't want to pay for their vices. SNAP should only be allowed for actually nutritious food. Its insane that we ever let SNAP pay for soda

> You are now the arbiter of what a child should and shouldn’t consume
Nope. Never mentioned age. It applies to everyone on SNAP equally. And soda/candy isn't illegal. People can still purchase it.
>We’re talking about disabled people here.
TIL that only disabled people get SNAP.
>but now she gets nothing.
your MIL should still get $200 to purchase food that isn't soda, but I didn't take the $200 away from her. How much do you think she spends on soda a month? Have you considered venmoing her $20/month to cover her soda since it makes her happy?
>I guess we want disabled people to not have the ability to eat what they want
Who is "we" because you're just making sweeping cause and effect generalization like saying no soda with SNAP money is the equivalent of starving disabled people in assisted living.
