It was back at the beginnings of the all-volunteer army after 'Nam 1977. Armored crewmen had about 4 months of basic and AIT combined. Then you got your orders. At the time they couldn't get people who would pass a clearance, so because I was combat arms, had some college, a driver's license, and no felonies, I was sent straight to Division G3. in Germany.

How the hell were you an E-1 while serving in a unit? The only qualifications for E-2 are 6 months in service or 4 months with a waiver that's incredibly easy to get. When I was in the Army, every single E-1 that joined our unit after basic and AIT were automatically given a promotion to E-2. And then another automatic promotion to E-3 at 12 months total time in service.
