A lot of investors are not honest about when and why they sell so it creates misconceptions. There are a lot of good reasons to sell an asset. For me, it often comes down to reaching my target, my risk tolerance has changed, you want to rebalanced because an assets has become too large of a portion of your investments, you want to shift your allocations, tax loss harvesting, you identify a clearly better alternative, consolidation, etc.
I have sold some ETFs this year to lock in profits (SLVR, PSLV, PHYS, CGGR, CHPY, SOXQ). I have sold some to de-risk as I get closer to retirement (some of the same as previously mentioned). I have sold some to consolidate (FMTM, HFMS). I have sold some at a loss because my risk tolerance changed (HOOW, COIW, MAGY).
Knowing when to buy is easier than knowing when to sell. There are definitely times when you don't want to sell. For example, when the market is extremely volatile like today or when an asset is reacting to recent news. The last two years have been a prime example of to not trade on news.
