I appreciate the detail here! I'm originally from the bay too - grew up in SF.
What do they call a med student that graduates at the bottom of their class?
I'm an older undergraduate student at 35y/o and wrapping up my computer science undergrad in the Spring. Although I've worked in the field for many years, I don't know that it's really for me in the long run, but it was the quickest degree for me to finish.
A bunch of kids in a few of my non-cs classes are pre-med and talking to them really piqued my interest. I'll need to take a few more science classes after I finish my degree but if this itch isn't scratched once I go back to work, I'll make an attempt at the MCAT.
Best of luck to you and your wife.

I'm studying for STEP 2 literally right now, which is probably the most stressful test for all of med school, and I would still prefer to do this than MCAT. MCAT is just a test that measures how well you can cram and regurgitate information, interpret passages, and memorize formulas. Both my wife and I took it 3 times. She got a 500 and I got a 502. Multiple studies have shown that the MCAT does not correlate with how well you do in med school, just that you know how to take tests. Which is important, but definitely not the end all be all. However, do you know what they call the student who graduates at the bottom of a class from med school?
Personally I was between 3 options: vet, music, or medicine. If I chose being a veterinarian, I probably would end up with a shit ton of animals. I had 27 reptiles/amphibians/insects at one point with a strong preference for Colombian red tail boas and tropical frogs. I would probably end up depressed putting down so many animals or broke from saving them for myself.
Musician I'd probably be broke. Nuff said...
Med school: I grew up on a ranch; we slaughtered our own cattle. Smells and visual gore doesn't phase me most times. I'm the kind of person that doesn't sit still very well and would rather be useful than not. Another part of me is a deep seeded fear, if not my worst fear, of not being able to do anything for someone I love. So from a really fucked up up-bringing, I yearned for a family I could protect in case something happens out in the wild. I did 5 years of ALS EMT throughout undergrad in all 3 major cities in the bay area (SF, SJ, Oakland) followed by 3 years of ED tech to make sure it was what I liked. Loved it. I had to decide between trauma surgery or EM. I chose EM because I want to work to live, not live to work.
So in a really long explanation, I feel like medicine was the only option for me. I do not recommend it for most people because if you're going for money, pride, or stature, you'll hate it cause a lot of people suck. Like the kind of people you never thought existed type of crappy people. My worst night out of 11 years of medicine was back to back 2 AM rapes of 1 year old babies. 1st was a mom who thought the dad did it. The second was more fucked up.
Mom and dad were acting normal the whole time with their twins. Even when they showed me and the physician the video of the mom's 12 year old brother recording himself fucking his niece. I was so fucking angry at them and couldn't react.
Am I happy? 800k debt between the two of us, busy as hell, rotations are hard, lots of information to know, while managing your own life, and most likely missing most major events for friends and family for the next 7 years MINIMUM depending on specialty. God forbid something actually bad happens in the middle of it, like I had a 3 year lawsuit that went to trial with my older brother who got disinherited by my dad and sued me and my younger brother for it. Almost didn't make it to my 3rd year. That's not even everything. So in other words, you gotta really want it.
But I like it. I just haven't seen it be worth it... Yet. Still waiting for that day.
P.S. Perspective of future pay since she just signed for next year is close to 374k yearly/228 hourly.
