I’ve been building around dividend growth and quality companies, with JNJ, SCHD, WM, ABBV, PG, PEP, VTI and HD as my main holdings.

My goal is to eventually retire with a solid passive income stream. I’m at about 3.9% yield on cost right now.

Anything you’d change?

This strategy—taking a car loan even when you have the full amount available and investing the money instead—worked exceptionally well for me.
When I bought my EV in May 2022 for 18 lakh, I had the entire amount available in savings. Instead of paying for the car outright, I took a 15 lakh car loan at 7.25% for five years. One of the reasons was the tax benefit available on the interest under Section 80EEB for an eligible EV loan. I invested the 15 lakh that I retained entirely in HD*C Small Cap – Direct Plan.
The timing obviously worked very much in my favour. The market was in a strong bull phase, and despite the consolidation/correction we've seen since late 2024, that investment is now worth around 34 lakh.
So, purely from my experience, the strategy has worked exceptionally well. I effectively borrowed at 7.25% and invested the equivalent capital in an asset that has generated substantially higher returns.
But I wouldn't consider this a guaranteed arbitrage or a universally applicable strategy. The outcome depends heavily on the market cycle, the investment chosen, your investment horizon, and your ability to tolerate volatility. There can easily be periods when your mutual fund investment falls significantly while the loan EMI continues unchanged.
For someone with a long investment horizon, a stable cash flow, and the ability to stay invested through market cycles, however, using low-cost debt to retain capital in productive assets can potentially work very well. The key is to understand that you're taking additional risk—not getting a free return.

I drive an hour to a home depot that had a Weber slate griddle on clearance. That HD is also nearby where my MIL lives so I stopped by to help her with some stuff around the house to score points with my wife.
Normal price is $750. I got it for $480. We're leaving for the beach this week so I hope to have it set up when I get back for Labor Day.
