Personally, if this were my older relative who wanted me to handle their money, I would leave a much smaller portion in cash (maybe 10k) and put the rest in VSMGX, Vanguard LifeStrategy Moderate Growth, a simple 60/40 fund. Or do a DIY set up with 60% VT (or VTI if they didn't want international), maybe 30% BIV and 10% VTIP if they were opposed to a balanced fund.
If my relative were opposed to international equities but in favor of a balanced fund, I would use VBIAX, Vanguard Balanced Index Fund, another excellent 60/40 fund but with no international holdings.
