I am closing on one year of trading small caps now so I am still fresh in the game.
I still try every now and then to catch the move.
I try to enter on a strong candle, MACD is positive, we have clearance of VWAP, volume and momentum is there etc.
But many times I just end up catching the top of day or what looks like the top of day.
Luckily I learned to see some of the signs before it hurdles down and I exit with small losses.
So I loose motivation and interest in the big moves, do some safe small scalps and it´s ok.
The trick for me is that many times when I don´t touch the stock I think is going to have a big move, it has that big move and I am sitting out.
And many times when I see some indeciciveness in the market on a stock I am in I can try to wait, but the few times I wait for a while it ends up rolling over.
The times I end up selling to avoid going down with the fall, it ends up having that big move after all.
I can forexample see topping candles with topping wicks barket green or red and a strong red candle follwing with the MACD going negative and going under VWAP.
That seems like a bearish signal in that moment so I exit, only to take a loss and see it going up after all a few candles later.
Today I entered NCPL at 0.49 while it was having a good momentum up and thinking that this has a barrier point at 0.5.
It falled 3 times to move past 0.5 with 3 bottoms touching 0.44, 0.43 and 0.42 consequtively. I think this is bearish behaviour in the moment so I exit.
5 minutes later it rallies to 0.71. This is not a huge move but I ended up losing instead of getting a profit.
And at this price level 20 cents can be a good win.
This is just one example, I have experienced similar things on other stocks up to 10$ but I try to stay under 10$.
Cutting to the chase.
I am using indicators, seeing momentum, checking confirmation, staying level headed and not reacting to FOMO, getting emotional or revenge trading.
It seems like I am doing the things I am supposed to, but it doesn´t work when trying to catch the big moves.
So my question is, are catching moves a complete waste of time and lottery?
Should I stick to my small base hits and forget all the moves, or am I missing some essential thing that can be tought and that others have success with catching the move?
