For me, the "naive" explanation doesn't quite fly.
Sztorc is smart and capable, and while he's got a bit of a planet-sized ego (similar to Hoskinson), he would've been a valuable addition to Bitcoin development if only Core had entertained his ideas about Drivechains with a bit more seriousness.
His stuff got rejected for the same reason other sensible improvement proposals got rejected.
So I think that his bitterness and anger about that got him working together with, or rather, putting his capabilities at the service of, people who are unscrupulous about exploiting anything and everything to do with Bitcoin/crypto. Leading to this cynical fork, stealing Satoshi's coins for their own ends and even trying to put an end to the 'eCash' brand by hijacking that _again_ (I will say I already found it a bit tasteless of XEC to try to take the eCash brand for themselves after Chaum's labors on it).
Where I will ascribe some naivete to Sztorc is in giving the BS/Core crew the benefit of the doubt for far too long. Years after others had already demonstrated that BS/Core were acting in bad faith and had become captured, controlled opposition to real Bitcoin development, he was still plugging away in favor of the BTC maxis.
