Use whatever brokerage you want (a lot of people like WealthSimple for low fees), but lots you large standard bank brokerages (TD /BMO) because it’s convenient.
I’d recommend buying EFTs (XEQT:VEQT) until you learn more about the market.

TD DI.
I pay 9.99USD per trade and about 1.5% above the exchange rate to buy USD. But all my dividends come in USD for that account.
