You have the right idea. It's a variation on what I do in having core etf positions and then other positions that try to beat the market based on your risk tolerance.
In my case I have 50% in balanced, broad market core etfs and 50% in stocks/thematic etf plays.
I also have a gold position in FNV that kind of spans both categories as an individual stock with the risks involved, but also exposure to gold which I consider a core position.
It can get complicated, but overall what i try to do when buying stocks is maintain the balance of my total portfolio in terms of regional, sectoral, and strategic balance.
My suggestion is a simplified set it and forget version. XEQT is what it is, CAGE is similar, but adds that factoral value element. GOOG and AMZN are solid long term growth stocks to give you an edge.
