I lot of people pooey on these types of covered-call funds. First let me say that at your age, I would be 100% growth, such as VFV at maybe 75% of my portfolio and if interested, some single stock picks from the Mag-7. Then as you approach retirement, I would start trading off the growth funds (not during a sell off or 'crash') and accumulating some funds similar to HMAX. I have lots of this one, and many others. I diversify by sector but also by company, in this case Hamilton. I have HMAX, HYLD, HDIV, FMAX, SMAX, QMAX and UMAX. I also have some by Global-X: BKCL, CNCL, ENCL, QQCL, and USCL. Next up: Purpose Investments: APLY, YNVD, YAMZ, YGOG, YTSL and PDIV. I have other dividend fund too. VFV is still my largest stock/ETF. I am nearing retirement and been accumulating these income generating funds during dips in order to lessen the capital loss. Everyone is different and each person has different goals and risk tolerance.
Of all the ones listed above, not including YTSL due to its volatility this year, only HMAX and UMAX are below my avg price, by less than 2% each. The rest are up, as high as 35%. You really need to know how they work and if if they will work for you. I disagree with the generic statement "they will **continually go down over time** but that's me. Lastly, a lot of people will cherry pick a historic chart to show how poorly a fund is doing presently, comparing a high point, to present. I do not DRIP these funds. They should be manually purchased with deliberation during dips IMO.
