Congrats on starting early! How attached are you to your $5,000? If you are willing to accept some risk you can find some fairly safe 100% gain opportunity plays like FMCCP at $25.50ish that will pay close to a 12% dividend once dividends are turned back on. You could just buy FMCC at around $11.50 and possibly see $30-50 per share if/when Freddie and Fannie are released in November or December. I have a fairly big position in these companies so if you have questions feel free to message me or ask here. VOO is a good safe bet, but you are so young you could end up significantly better with individual companies. Nothing is ever guaranteed but the companies I mentioned above are where I've currently got my money.
