From my perusal of a bunch of random companies listing their environmental, social, and governance score, I've gotten to see a whole lot of bullsh\*t.
Please, tell me why private prison company Corecivic Inc is given a leader score in governance and environmental protection and an average in social responsibility. Well, I suppose the company is fitting in well with the Trump administration's governance style. But, who would have known that it is just societally average, normal, typical thing for a private prison to support the abduction of people throughout the United States, ignore due process, and have 32 people die in their ICE affiliated facilities in the past year.
 
Then again, we have companies like Altria group, Intuitive Machines, and Science Applications International Group that have a lower social score than a private prison. What the heck does an IT company have to do to get a lower social responsibility score than a private prison?
 
The ESG scoring template that I'm referring to is the MSCI ESG rating. This is the same rating program that gives the Canadian Utilities company a score of *leader for the environment.* At the same time, a majority of companies within the Canadian utility industry green-wash their advertisement and actively lobby against the support of climate change policies. While CDUAF is not directly named, it is one of the leaders in the utilities industry and trades in the top 60 to 70% percentile for its industry.
 
And just one more to add to the bunch of irresponsibly reported "leaders" in ESG. Tell me why space companies are receiving high environmental scores. You're telling me that the still barely studied pollution of the stratosphere and mesosphere through rocket launches is somehow environmentally friendly?
 
Not to mention, looking at the top rated ESG ETFs to buy, let me tell you what their top holdings are. Do you want to guess? Because if you have been looking at the lack of diversity in most ETFs and mutual funds, you won't be surprised. Yep, that’s right, the top holdings of some of the biggest ESG ETFs are Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon… need I say more? You can barely tell the difference between an ESG ETF and an American IT heavy ETF.
 
Why is that the case? Well, big companies like Apple and Microsoft get to offload their more nasty company policies, like tiny hands manufacturing phones, to affiliated companies who get the slap on the wrist for the poor social responsibility. Meanwhile, the big kahunas can get their backs patted for being just a stand up global citizen.
 
MSCI needs to cut the bullsh\*t. We have some companies that are in the direct line of sight into being hypocritical ESG fakers and some companies that are passing off their more dirty activities to subsidiary companies in order to win their own ESG award.
 
Will there ever be a real ESG rating that I can actually give a shit about?
 
Part of the ESG hype must stem from companies wanting to pull in more of the millennial generations money and most of the younger generation have grown up constantly hearing about climate change and corporate greed that they need a little sweet treat to get involved. That treat is *you can make the world a better place and make some money too*!
 
Sure investing in a high MSCI rated company can make you feel good for about two seconds before the edible really hits and you gotta lay down. But anybody actually spending the time to look into most of these highly rated companies and ETFs are going to have a rude awakening when they realize their moral investing is just a bunch of bullsh\*t.
 
But I am not a complete naysayer! I think it is a great idea to have morally responsible investing and, oh wait, did the U.S. just invade Venezuela, time to invest in some oil, baby, let's go!
