Passenger car registrations in the European Union increased by 5.8% Y/Y in October to touch 916,609 units. YTD October 2025, new EU car registrations increased by 1.4% compared to the same period last year, marking the fourth consecutive month of growth, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) said.
This follows a 10.0% rise in September, with three of the EU’s four largest markets recording gains. The registrations in Spain rose 15.9%, followed by a 7.8% rise in Germany and 2.9% in France.
For the first ten months of 2025, total EU car registrations grew 1.4% compared with the same period last year. In the battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment, registrations surged by 38.6% YTD, driven particularly by a massive 90.1% jump in Spain, 63.2% in France, 47.7% in Germany, and 27.4% in the Netherlands.
Hybrid-electric car registrations captured 34.6% of the market, remaining the preferred choice among EU consumers.
YTD petrol car registrations declined by 18.3%, with its market share down to 27.4% While the diesel car market declined by 24.5%, resulting in a 9.2% market share. Meanwhile, the combined market share of petrol and diesel cars fell to 36.6%, down from 46.3% over the same period in 2024.
While BYD's (OTCPK:BYDDF) (OTCPK:BYDDY) sales in October increased 206.8% Y/Y to 17,470 units and held a 1.6% market share in October from 0.5% in the same month last year, Tesla's (TSLA) sales fell 48.5% from a year ago to 6,964 units and had a 0.6% share from 1.3% last year. Another Chinese company, SAIC Motor, saw a 35.9% increase in registrations over the previous year.
Overall, Trump's trade tariffs, a slowdown in the Chinese market, and a slower-than-expected shift to EVs are a few setbacks impacting the European auto sector.
"Despite this recent positive momentum, overall volumes remain far below pre-pandemic levels." ACEA said. "Hybrid-electric vehicles lead as the most popular power type choice among buyers, with plug-in hybrids continuing to gain momentum." it added.
