July hike has been fairly high even with the MOC being in place back in June

Yeah, 3:50 PM EDT is the exact window where official Market-On-Close (MOC) imbalance orders lock in and hit the tape. It’s when institutional rebalancing algorithms take over. If pre-MOC drift velocity is flat or negative leading into that 3:50 mark, there's no real institutional buying power behind the move—which is why those late 3:49 PM candle pushes usually turn into 0DTE theta traps.

Good call skipping it. Trying to lock in credit on an IB that late leaves zero room for error into the 3:50 MOC imbalance. Those late-day whipsaws make managing the wings a nightmare with end-of-day slippage.

Wanted to share a post-market look at how 0DTE option premiums behaved during the last 15 minutes of yesterday's SPX session (July 28).
Even though SPX held up as a green trend day (finishing up around +15.6 points), the EOD price action was a brutal trap for late 0DTE momentum buyers.
Around 3:48–3:49 PM EDT, SPX printed back-to-back green 1-minute candles pushing back toward the session highs near the 7440–7450 zone. On a chart, it looked like a classic late-day melt-up where ATM calls usually see a rapid gamma expansion into the 3:50 PM Market-On-Close (MOC) imbalance.
However, looking at the order flow leading up to the 3:48 PM bar, institutional participation had actually stalled out. Pre-cross drift velocity between 3:40 and 3:47 PM sat flat to negative (-0.08 points). There wasn't real institutional flow driving that final push, just light volume sweeps.
Once the 3:50 PM cross imbalance landed, SPX gave a quick 3-point knee-jerk drop, bounced 8 points back up, and then chopped sideways in a tight band into 4:00 PM.
The option contract impact was brutal: • Traders paying up for ATM 7440 Calls on the 3:49 push watched contract values rapidly deflate even while SPX held near highs, as theta decay and volatility contraction completely took over. • Anyone trying to buy late puts on the 3:50 drop got sliced by the immediate 8-point reversal.
It was a solid reminder that 1-minute candle color right before 3:50 PM isn't enough context. Without underlying pre-MOC drift supporting the move, buying 0DTE momentum into the close usually ends up fighting steep theta crush for very little upside.
