Schwab has automatic investing only for mutual funds, not ETFs or stocks. I (and my adult children whose Roth IRAs I manage for them) use Schwab's Automatic Investing Plan (AIP) to buy several mutual funds including FKRCX every week so I can automatically buy funds I know I want to have, but I also buy (and sell) ETFs and individual stocks, usually with limit orders.
>Do you buy commodities, like GLDM, as well or just FKRCX?
I started buying gold ETFs - SGOL, BAR, PHYS - and physical gold (and silver) in 2019. The gold ETFs are all up over 230% since then, which is more than the S&P 500 index (VOO) has risen since then. If I were to buy a gold ETF now I would probably use IAUM - which has a slightly lower expense ratio, and a lower share price, than GLDM, which matters at my brokerage Charles Schwab because Schwab doesn't sell fractional shares of ETFs - but IAUM didn't exist in 2019 when I started buying gold ETFs and physical gold. The reason I bought more than one gold ETF was because at the time there was some question about whether the gold ETFs were being audited to ensure they actually held the physical gold they claimed to hold, so I wanted to spread my risk around.
My precious metals-related ETFs, stocks, and mutual fund:
* gold ETFs: PHYS BAR SGOL
* platinum and/or palladium ETFs: PALL SPPP
* gold mining stocks ETFs: GDX SGDM
* silver mining stocks ETF: SLVP
* gold mining stocks mutual fund: FKRCX
* gold mining stocks and gold futures ETF: GDMN
* individual gold and silver mining stocks: AEM AG ARMN AU AUGO B DRD EGO EQX EXK FNV FSV FSM GFI HMY IAG IVPAF KGC MUX NEM NGD ORLA PAAS RGLD SSRM WPM
Schwab has a service called Schwab Investing Themes™ for clients where Schwab's analysts select stocks that follow themes like AI, US National Defense, Electric Vehicles, Aging US Population, etc. I got many of the individual stock recommendations from Schwab's Precious Metals theme, which is by far the best performing investing theme at +231.25% over the past year (S&P 500 index is up +17.48% over the past year). The second place theme, Space Economy, is up +108.18% over the past year.
Because of the tremendous rise in precious metals since 2019, they have grown to become an outsized percentage of my total portfolio. But because of macro trends that caused me to invest in precious metals in the first place - out of control US government deficit spending and US dollar creation to finance it, ballooning US national debt, global de-dollarization, central bank gold buying - have only gotten worse since 2019, I am not planning on "rebalancing" my portfolio. In fact, I am leaning more heavily into precious metals, mining stocks, and non-US stocks, to protect my wealth from the coming storm.
