Your last sentence is exactly why I finally recently committed to learning about market investing. I only stepped in with about a third of my savings because although I am a dreamer, I am quite conservative with my money! After trying to learn scalping, day trading, swing trading, single stocks buy and hold etc. I realized I just did not have the psychology to risk my money like that on my own. You can get pretty stressed out with information overload. Kind of a analysis paralysis. Thankfully I found this board! There are so many suggestions about how to take baby steps.
In a nutshell I opened a brokerage account with Charles Schwab. I went with thinkorswim web version as opposed to the desktop or mobile version because the desktop is quite technical and I don't like doing these kinds of things on my phone. To satisfy my risky/dreamer side I opened an aggressive mutual fund via Schwab with half my account. Way easier for me to be aggressive when I'm letting the pro's worry about it :)!!
After taking other advice from this board I built myself a simple 3 ETF diversified portfolio. I decided to go with the State Street eco system. My ETF's are SPTM for U.S. exposure, SPDW for developed world exposure, excluding the U.S. and SPEM for emerging markets exposure. My ratio is 60% SPTM, 30% SPDW and 10% SPEM. I am slowing working the other half of my account into these 3 ETF's so that I can do that dollar cost averaging that is recommended. I finally feel like I'm accomplishing something with my account. Keep reading this board. I hope you find your path too!

SPTM has %100 of SPYM in it...plus 1000 more companies for roughly $3-4 more/share...happy hunting!👍🙂

Sounds like you might like SPTM (S&P 1500). Perfectly good, low fee fund. Like the S&P 500, but includes mid and small caps with some light filters.
For international, maybe you would like VEU or SCHF+SCHE (leave out international small caps).
