Most of that could be said for telecom as well. Don’t get me wrong there will be an end eventually, but I don’t think we will live to see it. I’ve been told this is a “dying” industry for the past 20 years, with this year being our biggest for raw land new builds.
And with it only costing \~$250-300k to set up a new monopole, it is still the only cheap, and not to mention only possible, solution for denser areas.
These microwave networks are used for defense and emergency services both local and national. This will probably never be deactivated. Even if SAT is used as a primary, the infrastructure of hundreds of thousands of towers is already there as a secondary just needing maintenance.
Although I agree this is the future, I wouldn’t count on decommissioning these structures anytime soon. And I’d definitely wouldn’t bank on SAT taking over populated centers.

With e-sims it’s automatic, at least with basic unlimited plans. I actually build cell towers for a living, and believe me there is no lack of coverage. The last time I had legitimately no service for miles was in the South Dakota Badlands, and I was still able to text my dad VIA SAT who was fishing 50 miles off the coast of Alaska haha. Always amazes how far we’ve come so quickly
