eh, HMAX is questionable; you are up like 15% yOy with another 10-12% paid out. Still well behind the leading three banks if you just bought and hold. TD is up over 70%, RY closing in on 40, even BNS doing better than HMAX.
HMAX is a good stock when banks trade sideways in a range for a long period so Nick can farm the CC premiums without forfeiting shares.

The thing about investing is you don’t know when it’s going to go up or down. It’s almost better to just automate your buys and only occasionally check. I’ll give you two examples of my experience since I started investing.
- I started investing in 2022, but I had been hesitant for couple year prior. At that point I had saved $10,000 in the bank just sitting there. I heard about Wealthsimple managed account and I finally took the plunge. Cue a month or two later my investments were -8%.
I did get scared for a bit but I keep investing, reminding myself to stick with it.
- I mostly invest in one of the EQTs now but I have a small amount in RY. I bought it when it was at $132
And then when it dropped to $115ish I stopped buying, thinking it wouldn’t recover. Knowing what I know now I should’ve just kept buying as RY is at $248 right now.
In the short term the market can drop, but it will usually recover. And your invests grow more if you’re buy at the lower price consistently then trying to time it.
I do feel like most new investors have to a make a mistake to really learn (I’m not saying they should necessarily lose money).
