Hey guys, please advise me on the following. I have approximately $300000 sitting in a Lira/rrsp account which is invested in Fidelity global innovators I have been with my mutual fund advisor for years and would like to know should I leave the mutual fund and just go and buy the ETF instead? I also have close to $100,000 in RSP with her as well. she is telling me not to do the switch because the paperwork and transition to go with another brokerage is a headache and require a lot of paper work.
Please fill me in on the details. i am in my 40’s

So I looked at this “dividend portfolio” and bro… it’s basically the financial equivalent of eating only Costco samples and calling it a balanced diet.
Here’s the straight talk:
You loaded up on covered‑call ETFs, which is like telling the market, “Nah I don’t need gains, just give me coupons.” SPYI, QQQI, JEPI — all of them literally sell your upside so you can feel good getting monthly pocket change. It’s income now, poverty later.
Then you sprinkled in BXSL, which is a BDC. Translation: “I want high yield but also want to stress-test my blood pressure every time rates move.” It’s fine, but it’s not the foundation of a $150K portfolio unless you enjoy living dangerously.
You added O, the REIT that pays monthly but grows slower than a DMV line. Cute, but it’s not saving you.
And the only actual long-term compounder in the whole thing is SCHD, which is basically sitting in the corner like, “I can’t carry all of you clowns.”
The whole portfolio is:
• High yield
• Low growth
• Capped upside
• No mid-caps
• No small-caps
• No international
• No diversification
• Just vibes and dividends
It’ll hit your 7% yield, sure.
But long-term? You’re basically trading a future mansion for a slightly nicer lunch money allowance.
If you want income and a future, you need at least ONE adult ETF in the room (VO, VIG, DGRO, QUAL, RSP). Otherwise you’re running a portfolio that looks like it was built by ChatGPT after three beers and a YouTube video titled “Passive Income HACKS!!!”

There is no argument against GOOG except that you shouldn't have more than 10% into it. Maybe a little more if you are more than 50% into a broad index like SPY or VOO or RSP.

I got 865 stocks at $220 (back in May).
If it stays in loss by end of December, I'll sell to harvest the losses and buy VOO or RSP for the same amount..
Looking at this stock always in loss makes me sad too but not enough to sell in loss 😔

RSP is a funky mid-cap fund.
[RSP (S&P 500 Equal Weight) vs SPMD (S&P 400 Mid Cap)](https://www.google.com/finance/beta/quote/RSP:NYSEARCA?sa=X&sqi=2&ved=2ahUKEwj61tLlmYiWAxVAMjQIHSxtLzAQ3ecFKAB6BAgVEAE&keymoments=false&window=5Y&type=line&comparison=SPMD%3ANYSEARCA)

Let's say you invest now, wind up doubling your investment, then the market drops 50%: you're back where you started and still have all your original money. (I doubt the market will double before it drops 50%, but three years of 25% returns would just about double the market, so maybe.)
If you want to avoid the tech heavy index funds, you could consider an equal weighted fund, like RSP, or international funds, though some of those are actually fairly tech heavy too due to Korean chip stocks. MSCI treats Korea as an emerging market, however, so you could consider an international fund based on MSCI's definition of developed countries (check out EAFE).
You could also keep 10-20% of your funds in something like a government money market. I know Fidelity offers a couple of options for "cash" that actually yields \~3.5%. Schwab and the other brokerages have similar "cash" options.
Morgan Housel once wrote that he looks at cash as yielding two benefits: one, it can minimize a drawdown if your investments crash, but two, if or when the crash comes, you have cash available to buy stocks cheap.

Boglehead = VT/VTI&VXUS + BND.
I have more than the 3 fund portfolio because mega cap is so overweighted in everything right now. Therefore, I'm reallocating 10% to RSP. I'm in my 60s so I'm in a more defensive/conservative/balanced state of mind.
Strict Equal Weighting: It divides the portfolio equally, giving each of the 500 companies an equal share of about 0.20%.
Value/Size Tilt: Strips away mega-cap dominance, effectively introducing a heavy tilt toward mid-cap and smaller large-cap stocks.
Sector TTM: Highly balanced across sectors, led by financials (~14%), industrials (~15%), and tech (~16%).

Bengen’s new portfolio essentially implements an ersatz equal weight strategy by using large cap, mid cap, small cap and micro cap, cap weighted ETFs to reduce cost, turnover and tax drag…the primary disadvantages of an equal weight ETF like RSP.
Not surprisingly it improves SWR from more diversification and the historical small cap premium. Lower volatility but also lower absolute growth vs market weight which provides concentration in the presumably most successful companies

I dont care for RSP. Too much weight in the smallest and most questionable names and a high management fee.
I like TOPC much better. 3% cap and then reallocates what got chopped off of the largest names proportionally. Addresses concentration risk much better IMO.
That said I do not invest in this either. I use AVUS as my US core. I would however use TOPC long before using RSP.

I am still considering dumping money into RSP in my brokerage account along with some small cap value but Ben's video has me rethinking my decision.

I personally would have no problem putting all my money in Berk.B. Would at least like to have the VOO or RSP of VDC ETF paired with it though.

Example? Capital losses only apply against capital gains and can be carried forward indefinitely, so I don't think it matters when you take a loss? I'm not an expert though so if that's wrong in some way I'd be curious to know why.
I think that logic does apply to capital gains though, particularly if you were anticipating a low income year in the following year. I honestly haven't thought about this much because all of my investments are in RSP accounts.

I’m personally invested in 72% VTI; 20% VGT; 8% NBIS/ASTS/RKLB/VOYG/VELO. I know it’s not a Boglehead portfolio strictly speaking but that’s not really important to my question. I feel as though an equal weighted fund like RSP is actually quite in line with the Boglehead portfolio philosophy.

**SPXT.** It holds the S&P 500 excluding companies classified in the IT sector.
**RSP.** It equal weights the SP.
They lag AVUS, and other broad markets, but those are two options. I’ve used RSP as an IRA holding ground instead of cash.

I held SNOW for \~5.5 years and finally let it go in March in favor of others I had higher conviction on. Took a 24% loss while SPY was up 77% and RSP was up 55%. Since the day I sold, SNOW is up 85% and I'd be well in the green if I had held.
My highest conviction software stocks right now are IOT (hardware is a big part of their software story), VEEV, GWRE, and TYL. On the cyber side, DDOG and CRWD. I also hold NOW which I don't plan to sell but it's still a level of conviction below my others.
