PARC's Alto was first with a desktop, Stanford's NLS was first with a gui, iirc.
There were even a couple of years between apple's lisa and microsoft's windows 1.0 with other companies releasing desktop guis in between. They weren't the first by a long shot, they're just the biggest companies doing it today. If your investment advice is "just invest in companies that will dominate the industry in fifty years" your advice is useless.
