Honestly, staring at the weekly chart feels a bit unsettling right now. Eight red candles back to back, and the last streak this long was in 2001. September alone took off 5.67%, the worst September in eight years, with 40 of the 50 Nifty stocks closing lower.
My DMs are full of the same question: "should I just sell everything?"
From what I can tell, most of the pressure is external. The US 10 year yield is around 5.3%, so when a bond that safe pays that much, global money has less reason to take emerging market risk. FIIs have pulled a record \~$27.8B out of Indian equities in 2026. On top of that you have crude above $100, a weak rupee, rate hike fears and a heavy IPO calendar. None of this is one company's fault.
What stood out to me is that from 3 Aug to 25 Sep, Nifty went from 24,573 to 23,140. That's only about 5.83% over 8 weeks. The 7 week streak in 2008 took roughly 22%. So it's long in duration but mild in depth. Valuations have also cooled, with PE around 19.3 (about 17% below the 10 year average) and P/B around 2.75. DIIs have been net buyers for 37 straight months.
My view: selling here doesn't make sense to me. Keep SIPs running, deploy idle cash in tranches, lean toward quality, and keep your emergency fund separate. If stock picking isn't your thing, a plain Nifty 50 index fund does the job.
There's risk too. Nobody can call the bottom, me included. 2012-13 saw strong recoveries, but in 2008 the market fell further after the streak ended. October is expected to stay volatile.
I'm NISM certified . This is not investment advice, do your own research.
