Before I bought my first stock, I listened to a lot of “Investing for Beginners” podcast. It has some good information.
I also started with a “Buy what you know.” mentality - so I focused primarily on checking trends of companies who’s products I use on a daily basis - and “Why” do I use them? What product could be substituted for this? Is this item/product/service something I need, or is it more of a luxury?
I’ve done pretty good. I’ve had a few poor choices (TAP, KDP), and some great ones (GE, MAXR - before MAXR sold).
I’ll be honest I wish I hadn’t sold off my GE Vernova or GE shares when I did… I made a great profit doing so but holy hell I would’ve made a lot more. Though to be fair, MAXR wasn’t a dividend payer and GE had an extremely small one. Now I’ve got 2 REITs in my top 3 holdings.
I haven’t put more into the account in awhile since my current job has a pension I pay into and it’s a significant forced amount. Once I’m not paying daycare expenses I’ll most likely be putting money in again.
Over the last 12 months I’m up \~33%, while NASDAQ is up almost 32% and S&P is up 23%. So I think I have a good formula. :)
