I opened up a 529 for my son. First child and didn’t think much of it as my local credit union has a solid reputation. Well I’m working with a local financial advisor on my savings account who has been straight forward about fees, planning for the 10 years and changing strategies after , etc. I asked if they managed 529’s, they said no but still looked at my statements. The credit union contracts out that part of the business and essentially was screwing is with 5% fees. I will note , the annual yield was 10-11%, but they said to change it to the state funded 529 as it’s no fees and you get a state write off. They were genuinely upset as they don’t manage 529s for that specific reason, you can’t beat the state ran one. Anyways, it took like 3-4 months for the LPL rep to play ball and assist with the transfer.
