I suppose it can look like financial envy if you see finance through a neutral or a good lens. But there is still the possibility that the professors have some sort of a negative stance on it, which is not atypical (I have seen professors who hate finance altogether either morally or because the programs they supervise are designed for other purposes) and this can give alternative explainations for their rejection of delivering an LOR.

I suppose not, but what I was agreeing with above is that helping a student get a job is basic human decency.
Avoiding giving a LOR for a job (which ngl is a new concept to me) is different from avoiding giving a LOR for academic research - since a job involves survival.
In the context of a job, avoiding giving the paperwork looks less like a principled moral stance and more like envy (principled stance is fine for academia since your reputation is on the line with your peer reviewers).

LOR isn't a recommendation of an institution to the student. It's a letter certifying that the student is a recommendable individual for that institution. The only disagreement you can morally withhold an LOR in that case is if you think he would be a bad fit for that role. What OP says makes it sound more like the profs look down on the profession itself. In that case, withholding LOR or holding a grudge is morally shite.

The only reason I'd not write a LOR for a student is if the job was to become an African Warlord.
Students have it hard enough nowadays. And as adults we should be mature enough to know that sometimes jobs are just to pay the bills.
