Samsung SDI. Huge 75% drop in price after management changed in 2025 with goal of making them a major independent player, and multiple years of capex, resulting in 7 straight quarters with losses, now returning to profitability this quarter and with commercial release of solid state batteries on track for q2 2027. Probably 3 years ahead of the competition. They’ve been sending prototypes to major industries with positive results, and even prototyped a car battery for BMW.
Solid state will make things possible that have been power limited (drones, commercial flight, autonomous robotics) and solve the problems of EV adoption - rapid charging times, higher energy density. Imagine a car battery that goes 800 miles and charges in 20 minutes. And that’s in top of their established and profitable business in component supply. Off their top of 700-800KW in early 2020s they dropped to 200KW after the management change, now recovered to about 400-500k KW.
The return on capex pending, and overall value of the company pegged generally about 700-800kKW, conservative case should return to previous levels with profitability. If they hit it out of the park with solid state, maybe >1 or even 2 MKW. So I’m hoping for a 5-10x but would be happy with 50-60% in 1-2 year time horizon.
Major risks - korean market shenanigans, chaebol nonsense, oil shocks, global geopolitical shenanigans etc. Otherwise this are a real deal company that makes plans for the next decade, not just the next quarter.
