I am a software engineer working in DevOps and bioinformatics. I work at a biotech inside of JnJ and I can assure you, we are using AI all day, everyday and we know what we need it for and why. We are building and deploying more internal services than ever before. We have found, validated, and mitigated thousands of CVE vulnerabilities. We are conducting more quality control testing more software testing, more regression testing and more drift detection than ever before. This results in higher quality services for our patients.
Design and turn around are no longer the question. Scale is the question. Do you need an MVP? I’ll get it to you by EoD. Need a production ready orchestration pipeline for the diagnostics and drug delivery system? No worries that is a 1 quarter request not a 1 year request.
Really good AI, like really solidly designed and well executed AI is only about 1 year old. The drafts and early models were eh but opus 4.6 was unbelievable that was when they rolled out the Ferrari. There was a magical moment where I was getting Claude author PRs that I didn’t auto-reject. The garbage turned into diamonds. There was an acceleration moment.
So…. Give it a few seconds man. You may not be at the bleeding edge. But for those of us who are, it’s been like rocket fuel. And as for its effect on hiring? We hired 5 more engineers this year. We are just supporting so much more of the company with AI now. We need more engineers to work.
As for the effect on the environment, nuclear needs to be the answer. Power is a real problem. SMRs like from valar atomics or from NKLR need to be fast tracked. Those reactors need to be mass produced. The nuclear moment and the AI satellites will be another level set. It will be another “boom” moment.
Find a way to automate your work. AI won’t replace you but someone who is capable of using AI will.
