For me it was Caldor (CLD)… I had just read Peter Lynch’s book “One Up on Wall Street”… In the book he recommended going to store’s and count customers and cars in the lot, note empty shelves or long lines signaling demand, inspect product quality and displays etc…. My local Caldor was a great store and was always busy – how foolish and inexperienced I was back then. If I only went to Walmart that day! I made a big bet relative to my net worth on Caldor and lost it all…. my first painful lesson in the market and a valuable one, yet not my last!. I have done well in the market and lessons like that make you a better investor. I feel my portfolio today is a great combination of good compounders, is relatively ‘safe’ and best of all is I sleep well at night. In hinfsight, my losses in CLD was a blessing...
