The speed of the drop over the first half of 2025 is unremarkable. The dollar has strengthened and weakened at faster rates in multiple episodes over the past 5 years. Using the WSJ Dollar Index (BUXX on the WSJ site), the dollar has weakened 8.1% from the start of 2025 through June. This index weakened by 8.5% in the last 4 months of 2022, after rising 14% in the preceding 6 months. It even went up 7.4% in the last 4 months of 2024. The chatter about "the speed of the drop" is not founded on any actual numbers.
