Sure. Investing in REITs is nothing like owning a home. This should be obvious. When you buy a home you are not buying a slice of a whole housing market, you are buying a single, very expensive asset with unique features including location. You don't need to "track that consumption basket" because whether the housing market is up or down, that may not correlate to (1) your specific market and (2) the fact that you need to pay for housing every year regardless.
As broad market ETFs I would assume AVRE and DFAR include commercial exposure, a whole world of real estate risk that homeowners are not exposed to.
REITs are useful for diversifying a large portfolio... not this.
