With consumer discretionary and retail stocks taking a hit, valuations are starting to look attractive on paper. However, headline valuation metrics like **P/E** etc. don't tell you if the underlying business is actually surviving or just quietly dying.
Beyond standard financial statements, what **retail-specific operational and financial metrics** do you use to evaluate if a retail business is fundamentally sound?
Here is the checklist I'm putting together—what am I missing or overestimating?
# 1. Demand & Top-Line Quality
* **Same-Store Sales (SSS) / Comparable Store Sales ("Comps"):** Is growth coming from foot traffic/transaction volume, or are they just inflating prices? SSS filters out expansion noise (opening new unprofitable stores to artificially pump overall revenue).
* **Digital vs. In-Store Sales Mix:** Is the brand successfully executing an omnichannel strategy, or are online margins getting eaten alive by shipping/return costs?
# 2. Inventory Efficiency (Crucial for Retail)
* **Days Sales of Inventory (DSI) & Inventory Turnover:** Is inventory building up faster than sales growth? High inventory during a downturn usually leads to heavy markdowns, destroying gross margins in subsequent quarters.
* **GMROI (Gross Margin Return on Inventory):** How many gross margin dollars does the company generate for every dollar spent on inventory? Formula: Average Inventory CostGross Profit. This combines margin and velocity into one score. AGR Inventory
# 3. Store Productivity & Profitability
* **Sales per Square Foot:** Measures how efficiently physical real estate is being utilized.
* **Store-Level EBITDA / Contribution Margin:** Tells you if individual stores are profitable *before* corporate overhead gets factored in. If store-level margins are collapsing, closing stores won't easily fix the problem.
# 4. Margin Health & Customer Traction
* **Gross Margin Trend:** Is gross margin compressing due to promotional activity/discounting?
* **Average Order Value (AOV) & Units Per Transaction (UPT):** Are customers buying fewer items per visit or switching to cheaper options?
* **Customer Lifetime Value (LTV) to Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) Ratio:** (Mainly for e-commerce/DTC) Is acquiring customers costing more than the profit those customers generate long-term?
**What other KPIs do you rely on when digging into retail filings (10-Ks/10-Qs)? How do you account for lease liabilities (IFRS 16 / ASC 842) when looking at leverage?**
