Agree, MAX is by far the biggest mediation platform, something like 60%+ of mobile gaming impressions. So basically all demand for that inventory has to bid through it: Meta, Google bidding, Unity, Mintegral, DSPs through ALX. And AppLovin's own bidder (AXON) sits right there in the same auction.
The part people get wrong: AXON doesn't need to peek at rivals' bids in the live auction (that would be straight-up fraud). But AppLovin runs the auction, so they log everyone's bids and AXON learns from them basically in real time (guess what? totally legal). And on the same inventory, what Meta bid a second ago is almost exactly what they'll bid now, especially on no-ID iOS where bids are just placement + geo + format + a pacing knob that drifts slowly. So AXON can predict the top competing bid near perfectly and clear at winner price + epsilon. Completely legal, since everyone else only ever sees their own bids.
It's second-price economics for the house inside everyone else's first-price auction.
