That’s why it’s called “poor mans SSSS”. It doesn’t work like the actual SSSS, but rather by withholding cryptographically secure information.

Indeed, the passphrase is a 2/2 entropy (the seed is 1/2 entropy in this scheme). Redundant but doable.
see the passphrase rather as an - operational management - , while dealing with storing your seed, while you're exposed for practical reasons. ..
you expose the seed for a short window, even if you make a SSSS, you have all the shards together as some point, at the shards creation level for instance. (do you have roommates nearby? a clean environment ? can you perform all the tasks at once and safely ? and so on..)
correctly memorizing the seed, can be long too, and it is not failproof, so having the seed at hand somewhere + a passphrase is helpful to secure the so called seed....
in a perfect world, you just roll your dices, you get the entropy and bam you memorize your 12 words right from the start for sure...in practice, this is another story
