Chips last way longer than 2-4 years. Once the chips are out of warranty they get liquidated and filter down into homelab and SOHO use. SSDs get shredded, sure, but it's way more profitable for data centers to pull all SSDs to shred and then liquidate the rest of the rack contents before installing faster, newer in-warranty hardware rather than shred the entire contents of each rack. There are thousands of companies that do IT liquidation where they are contracted to remove all old rack hardware, shred any storage, and sell the remaining items. Many gamers/CAD/etc on a budget are using enterprise hardware from 5-10 years ago and AI hardware is no different, the primary use case for old liquidated AI hardware will just be running local open-source models at home but much of it can also be reused for other purposes as well.
