This is incredible advice and possibly the best advice to gauge your position sizing and level of conviction tbh.
A big reason that financial advisors is necessary for a lot of professionals is not because they are amazing investors (the majority of them suck), but they can still create outperformance vs. what you would do on your own because of emotion.
I trade/ invest almost exclusively in SMID cap biopharma companies. Funny story, in the later half of 2024 I took a flyer on a controversial gene-editing company NTLA and had a small position around a $6 cost basis even though the data/ proof of clinical efficacy was very scarce. It was definitely a gamble. A friend of mine who is a big Cathie wood guy (lol) had probably listened to her pitch this and subsequently asked me about it and I told him I actually hold it and I think it’s a great R/R where the price is. Guy full ports and buys like 9k shares. October of 2025, a short squeeze happens and the stock runs up like 100%+.
I review all of the news/ pipeline competitors.. review my model, and my original position which is now 4x’d.. and liquidate my shares because nothing had changed in that time span. This guy starts non-stop roasting me…. Every conversation or group chat he forces in a jab towards me about how I have paper hands or how I am a “traitor” lol. Then the stock goes from 24 to 28 and I never heard this guy get so animated before that in my life. Of course in my hear, and so It convinced me to take another look because he tried so hard to get under my skin that it actually worked. I realize the science is so unproven and so early that I decided to take a big short position instead of just taking my gains and moving on per usual.
This guy was up about $50k in profit and let me tell you, I have never felt so much vindication in my life, when 1 week later it crashed -70%.
While I try to keep emotions out any or my investments, it’s very difficult. this guys’ emotions were so strong that he had to constantly remind of it, which ultimately made me emotional enough to make my most successful trade of that year
