I generally average down once and give them a chance. It also depends how speculative they are, like I will hold onto GOOGL or NVDA for longer than something like HOOD or CRCL.
But if its a long time like 3-6 months of them staying down then I'll take the loss and reposition myself somewhere else.

As you can tell, I I have been there. Lost a bunch playing options, futures, daytrading, wasted money on funded challenges, etc. Ended up in a dark place.
It's probably doable but I am not that guy.
I changed my approach: I find a few momentum stocks with setups that I like (normally bull flags), wait for a good entry (I never chase) and set my risk. If it takes off, I let it run and eventually profit. If it doesn't, it hits my stop.
Mental health is better, I can be fully focused on my job, and still try to make some money in the markets.

Look for example at $HOOD in early June. Beautiful risk reward. That's the kind of setup that I like. You may like others. Figure that out first. Learn how to scan for them. Enjoy that part of the process and try to avoid the dopamine hit of the quick win. It's an addiction like any other.

Yeah, wheeling SPY never made sense to me. Buy it when it's on sale and hold forever.
I like to wheel riskier, cheaper stocks, with a very small percentage of my portfolio. HOOD, MARA, RKLB, SMCI, INTC, NFLX, etc.
I sell puts at "support" levels and, if assigned, I sell calls at "resistance" levels. I try to get out as quickly as possible, I'm just trying to make a quick profit. But on these types of tickers, you can make 20%+ in a week or two.
Is there a risk that the stock falls straight through my short put and I end up bag holding for months, or years? Absolutely. That's why I do it with cheap stocks using only a few percent of my total portfolio.
