> I’ve decided I’d rather take that $700/month I’ve saved and put it into my HSA and if I need to pay for healthcare costs now, I just do it straight from that account. Saves on taxes now and doesn’t hurt my checking account/cashflow.
I'm doing the same. I'm a resident and our healthcare is basically immoral for how paltry our salary is - $850/mo for the PPO or $300/mo for the HDP. Even worse, when I was on the PPO, its coverage was horrible and I still wound up getting huge bills for visits, or even basic things like a CBC. I finally decided to just essentially self-insure by getting the catastrophic plan at $300/mo and then investing the $550/mo into an HSA. Nearing the end of residency now and I have over 30k built up in the HSA. Between that and our HDP, I have zero affordability issues for anything that might pop up now.
