I feel like you're attacking me here. I find this personally comfortable. I am in a union and have a state and union pension with COLA so SSI is not much of my later plan. I am in an exceptionally lucky position, I am aware. Just because I am am comfortable doesn't mean nothing needs to change.
I want everyone to have what I have in terms of security. Some people are less content than others, I don't need a lot to feel comfortable some others unfortunately do. I vote progressive. Your comment comes off a little abrasive and you could work on not coming off as hostile in your reply selection, I wouldn't want your solid reasoning to be diminished by a perceived negative tone.

pension payout calculation can have a big varience from employer to employer. so you have to look at the plan and see how they calculate based on years of service, average salary from X past/highest Y years

we think of our pensions as a second or additional social security check. ours will basically spit out 60% of our highest earning year with COLA until we die

If it's COLA I would probably opt for leaving it as payments.

I’m curious how Bogleheads would approach this situation. I’m fortunate to have a healthy pension that allows me to leave it as an inheritance to a child at 75% of my benefit, 100% COLA adjusted. All other things equal, would you prefer to leave (or have left to you) a pension or a larger lump sum? I can see benefits to both, and interested in what others think.
