\>>how do other people in the same age range as me who haven’t even gone to college or taken a mathematics course beyond the regular (BC CALC) know that they want to do this. Pure math is such a broad field and I mean I guess the money is really good but is that it?
I think a big factor that you’re missing out on is the fact that many people in that age range that know they want to do this were somewhat ‘trained’ from an early age to consider this as an option or had such a genuine passion in mathematics they explored the space very quickly. Thus, with that in mind, the types of people who are sure are also the types of people who probably took college math courses in middle school and high school (or went to schools that taught those courses) and basically prepped themselves early on in advanced and competitive maths. Otherwise, for regular students I’d say it’s probably the money or/and they genuinely don’t know. There’s a very small demographic of people who were overachievers since childhood whose lives were built around feeding into the quant career (e.g us NoVA kids who went to Haycock Elementary -> TJSST -> MIT/Caltech/Harvey Mudd)
\>>Does everybody who’s going into a quant feeder college and taking a mathematics major to “go into quant” already have experience of how it is and that’s why they’re so sure that they want to do this? Cause I mean there’s so much variety of different parts of the same financial industry that you could work in or even other industries like tech.
Yes and no. Building off what I answered previously, many of these guys already knew they wanted to do this because they were trained to want it. Who would train them? Obviously parents who know of quant, teachers who used to be in industry (again, usually found at the caliber of school they probably went to), or being in an environment where it’s more well-known (e.g. living in the Philly suburbs and knowing of SIG can help with planning how to break in).
\>>How come everybody is so sure that they want to be a quant without even stepping foot into college? Or is academia dead or something? As for me I want to see what the world of mathematics has before even coming to a conclusion or even grad school.
Yeah so in conclusion, regarding the two answers above, there’s only a very tiny group of people who are 100% sure (and even those guys might move onto something more intellectually stimulating, a couple of my friends are going to leave trading as soon as they finish their summer internships for startups). The others who say they ‘know’ are either LARPers or are incredibly naive and don’t actually know.
