This "community currency was created by Ken Young, a climate scientist turned cannabis farmer living deep in the isolated Mattole valley in Humboldt county CA ( aka The Emerald Triangle). In 2007 Young created this currency known as "Petols" in an attempt to break away from government backed currency. They were never intended to be used outside the Mattole Valley. It's also believed to be a clever money laundering technique! This was an illegal cannabis farming community that was growing a massive amount of high quality cannabis. There was an old law on the books, likely left over from the gold rush days. It made any precious metal exempt from government seizure. They could take everything BUT your gold and silver!! The 1 oz were only minted in 2007 by Northwest Territorial Mint.. **1 oz only minted in 2007-2 oz only minted in 2008 ULTRA LOW MINTAGE!!**
