I bought rocket lab at a cost average of 4.10 and am still holding. I’m sure the premise is set out below might not hold if I did a bit of digging but hey, that’s why I only chucked in a thousand dollars and not more.
The thought process was:
1. Rklb was too significant of a defence piece for either the US or NZ govt to let it fail without boosting its capital or doing something about it.
2. I’m sure rockets and the assets itself even if they had to be sold off, would be worth quite a lot, maybe even a billion or so.
3. I’m jaded and think 3 billion dollars is peanuts (it’s not, but from a market cap perspective).
4. If the company fails, I would have “only lost” 1k, and or the opportunity cost the money would’ve gotten me elsewhere.
I think these were probably the main thoughts I had at the time. I locked in 100 shares of gains at around 70 USD, and I’m letting the last 200 shares ride.
Another notable investment that has doubled for me since buying it 2021-2022 was VRTX. IIRC they have a moat on a drug treating cystic fibrosis until 2036. The thesis is simple - they basically have 15 years to come up with a new drug/revenue stream and I’m sure in 15 years, the really smart people at the company would come up with something.
My other holdings are Google, and planet labs which has also done fantastically. I bought ZBRA some while ago and sold after it went up 150% or so.
It’s not all sunshine and rainbows though, I’ve had a few that just went nowhere or maybe a small loss (at the time I bought anyway). ASO, Netflix, Coca Cola, APPN (none of these are current holdings).
The one I’m holding and is too early to tell is Adobe with an entry point at 238-240. I’m a prosumer of Adobe products and have genuinely not found a suitable alternative that fits what I want. Even if AI were improve significantly in creating assets, it doesn’t replace the hobby (and in fact probably encourages) taking photos and hand editing them yourself. I’m about to shoot a wedding soon, and no way am I using AI to help with it. I don’t see Adobe going away any time soon, which is why I’m betting on it.
