I like having a clear process when I build a trade, but I also want enough flexibility to follow what the market is actually telling me. (Pictures show the steps.)
My holding period is usually anywhere from 30 days to a year or more. It depends on the valuation, momentum and what I see in the market.
The steps are pretty simple. I start by downloading a sorted CSV list. In this case, I was looking at the Russell 2000. I wanted positive beta, a certain PEG number etc., which gave me around 200 companies. I then bring the data into Excel, clean it up and standardize the financials.
From there, I run a simple comps analysis, mainly looking at P/E, EV/EBITDA, leverage and other key ratios. When I find companies that look undervalued, I look at the chart. Honestly, 90% of them are usually terrible. The chart gives me an idea of whether buyers or sellers are actually controlling the price.
The ones with good earnings, momentum and a chart that looks good technically get marked in yellow. I then run my valuation on those names, which gives me the signal to buy or stay away.
Before buying, I do the deeper DD as well... listening to earnings calls, reading filings, listening to other people and so on.
That's pretty much how I approach it. I've got 9 years of experience and also did 2 years as an equity analyst. It's not exactly how I would model things at a firm. The process is similar, but everything is much more time-consuming and there's a lot more DD in a corporate setting.
I just like to rotate and be very active in the markets. That's my style.
I already own PBI but will buy more. Buying FVR, APEI and BFH as well. I'll buy starters first, then do more DD and maybe add option structures. But I will buy those 4 shares.
Staying away from TILE.
