Never EVER look at what your loss is. It is irrelevant because it is gone. You aren't owed what you lost and you aren't guaranteed it will come back. People hold on to these stocks for ages thinking, " Well eventulally I will make my money back...". Not always right. If you believe Telus has upside, then you might want to hold on.
However, with any losers in my portfolio, I always ask myself this question, and it makes me money:
If I sell it now, can I use that money to make more in another investment than parking it in the current investment?
If the answer is yes, then I sell it, take the loss, use the capital loss for taxes, and then re-invest in something else. As for Telus, I strongly feel you will see appreciation over the years. It still has positives. However, you are basically losing money waiting on that. Will it return to $26? Who knows. But I think if you put that money in any other investment right now, over the long run, you would come out ahead.
