Completely unproven in case of a prolonged contentious split with heavy selfish mining. Both BSV and XEC relatively quickly stopped contenting. Checkpoints do not improve the source of truth - energy signature - for economic agents to fall back to. Especially for CEXes
On the other hand, in this instance BTC is following an elegant way (unlike Segwit and RBF) with removal of old Bitcoin anti-DDos checkpoints: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/25725
