When people at VALUE INVESTING start mentioning NIKE, you know to avoid!

Simply put:
You bought a certain NUMBER of shares.
Those shares have a unit value.
The VALUE of it has gone down.
It will rise in the long run. Guaranteed.
You will still own the same NUMBER of shares if you don’t sell any.
So, you haven’t “lost money” in the literal meaning.
The VALUE of what you OWN has (temporarily) gone down and will rise in the long run.

I’ll give you some information your friends who have already hit their retirement number understand:
DOWNSIDE PROTECTION IS EVENTUALLY WORTH MORE THAN UPSIDE POTENTIAL.
Someone has $10M, maybe $2M is in some annuities that do not charge a fee or have any riders on it. That money WILL NOT LOSE VALUE and is acting as a bond replacement. Bonds are bad investments tied to interest rate risk as well as market sentiment. This also allows us to control taxes better because the taxes on gains are deferred until it makes sense.
Pensions are annuities. Would you hate working 30 years and getting a paycheck for life? No? That’s what everyone hopes for because security is worth something. Social Security is an annuity. Do you send that check back out of principle?
Annuities IN ALL THEIR VARIOUS FORMS make sense when used appropriately. You saw some bad annuities and that’s your opinion of them now. That’s fine. Retire in your own way and hope the market doesn’t take a shit the year before you want to be done. Stop making it my problem.
