Most of my liquidity sits in USDT, and recently I wanted some NVDA and gold exposure without off-ramping through a bank. Started digging into it, and realized the three main options solve completely different problems.
1. Brokers (like IBKR): They take stablecoin funding now (USDC/PYUSD, not USDT directly) and you get actual shares. Real equity ownership and no funding costs for spot. But you still have to swap your USDT and deal with regional paperwork.
2. CFDs: You get price exposure with zero ownership, but daily overnight financing charges eat into longer holds pretty fast.
3. CEX Perps: I’ve been testing this route on BYDFi lately for pairs like XAU-USDT and NVDA-USDT. It's the shortest path if your capital is already sitting in USDT. But you're trading a derivative, paying funding fees every 8h, and liquidation risk is always there.
Took me a while to internalize that if you actually want to hold NVDA equity for 2 years, perps aren't even competing with a broker. They're built for short to medium-term directional exposure without taking your capital off crypto rails.

On April 18, attackers exploited a weakness in Kelp's LayerZero bridge and minted roughly $293M of unbacked rsETH. Rather than just cashing out, they dumped the fake rsETH straight into Aave as collateral and borrowed real assets against it.
Aave responded by freezing deposits and withdrawals of rsETH. But this didn't contain the damage, it instead spread the contagion. rsETH depositors realized that even with their own funds frozen, they could still use that same collateral to borrow unaffected assets like USDT and USDC. So they did exactly that, in their minds with rsETH potentially going to 0, any recourse they could get was worth it, so they borrowed whatever stablecoin they could, with no intention of ever reclaiming back their collateral. Stablecoin utilization on Aave then shot up to 100%, and yields spiked above 10%, even though stablecoins had zero exposure to the actual exploit.
The situation eventually subsided and utilization normalized. But it exposed something uncomfortable about pooled lending design generally: contagion isn't contained to the affected asset. Any asset sharing a liquidity pool with a compromised one can get dragged into a liquidity crunch, even if it has nothing to do with the exploit itself.
That's the part that seems to have actually done the lasting damage. Users saw that their funds could be affected by risk they had no direct exposure to, and that fear triggered a broader exodus from Aave, and DeFi lending more generally, that a simple freeze couldn't undo.
Aave’s TVL in numbers:
* April 17 (day before the exploit): $25.93B
* April 19 (two days after): $21.80B
* July 21 (three months later): $14.40B
Aave lost over $11.5B in TVL, a 44.5% decline from pre-hack levels. The immediate 2-day fall is clearly hack-driven. What's more alarming is that it didn't stop there, TVL kept sliding for months instead of finding a bottom, this is likely the structural damage. Worth being upfront that this stretch also overlapped with a broader crypto downturn, so not all of that continued bleed can be pinned on Kelp specifically. But the fact that Aave never even stabilized, let alone recovered, four months out is notable regardless of how much is directly attributable.
Context on timing: the Kelp exploit also happened just 17 days after a separate $295M hack on Drift Trade (April 1), also allegedly linked to North Korean state hackers. Between the two, April alone accounted for $644.9M in hack losses, more than half of everything lost to hacks across the first seven months of 2026.
The uncomfortable part for lending protocols broadly: this attack vector, mint fake wrapped or liquid-staking tokens, deposit as collateral, borrow real assets, doesn't require finding a bug in the lending protocol at all. It only requires a bug somewhere upstream in whatever bridge or minting mechanism issues the collateral asset. Aave's contracts did exactly what they were designed to do, and it still took what looks like a permanent TVL hit because of a design property (shared liquidity pools) rather than a code flaw.

As a user of the coinbase card and metamask cards in the USA: both are debit cards, both offer attractive rewards on holding 'their' stables (USDC for coinbase, mUSD for metamask).

Coinbase is as you would expect, custodial. Metamask card is self-custodial, meaning you just authorize a spend limit, but maintain custody of your funds.

Each have cashback rates that are 'ok'.
Coinbase has an actual credit card too, not just a debit card. I think rewards are paid in BTC IIRC. I can't comment on it though since I haven't used it.

There are others, and what is available is going to vary by region. I will be interested to see who chimes in with what on this thread.

I've noticed that holding Bitcoin and actually using crypto for everyday finances are still two very different things.
For normal international income, the traditional setup works pretty well. You can receive EUR through SEPA, convert currencies, and spend through a regular card without thinking much about it.
Bitcoin is different. If part of your treasury is held in BTC, actually using that money usually means selling or converting it somewhere first. Stablecoins make the spending side more practical, but they still tend to live in a completely separate ecosystem from your bank account.
I've been looking at Keytom recently because it tries to bridge some of that gap. You can have EUR collection and SEPA alongside crypto, while the card is funded from USDC. It's worth pointing out that this doesn't mean you can simply spend BTC directly. The card uses USDC, so BTC would still need to be converted first. For someone who already keeps some cash in USDC, that's less of an issue.
I'm more interested in the broader trend than any particular service. If you're holding BTC as part of your longer-term finances but also need to spend money internationally, do you keep the two completely separate, or have you found a practical way to connect them?

Ohh okay, because I know I get some decent APY 6%+ on stables like USDC on defi protocols. I never had an issue taking out my money.

Gemini and Coinbase have regular old credit cards where you earn crypto rewards and can pay off with USDC. Both have obscene APR’s (so you need to pay off monthly), and bottom-of-the-barrel customer service, and low limits.

We make our money on advanced tools that include a swap, and automations. For example - one tool is "Repay", which uses collateral from your position to repay debt (so it doesn't require any money in your wallet). Repay works like this:
\-> Flash loans the amount of debt you wanted to repay
\-> Repays the debt
\-> Withdraws enough collateral to repay the flash loan
\-> Swaps the collateral to the debt asset
\-> Repays the flash loan
So this would be an advanced tool that includes a swap - and has three "tiers" of fees:
\- 0.01% for stablecoin swaps
\- 0.1% for swaps of correlated assets (say wstETH and ETH)
\- 0.25% for non-correlated assets (ETH and USDC, for example)
On top of that, our automations also perform these advanced actions, but just automatically based on the users input. So, someone might say "if my Aave position's health factor falls below X, I want you to repay enough debt so that my health factor goes to X" - essentially automatically keeping them safe from getting liquidated.
