Hello all,
I am wondering key differences between major banks and top-tier trading firms with respect to quantitative research tasks and work environment.
I am aware that things can differ firm by firm, team by team but am wondering a general tendency to get a sense of how I approach.
I am sharing my background as a context, in case it may help you get a sense of why I am asking.
Background: I have been doing good in US academia as tenure-track faculty in an R1 school, planning to break in next year for some reason; I got degrees from a school that is top-tier in an Asian country and post-doc training at an ivy school. I have a solid method/quantitative research track record in my field (environmental science and healthcare); I am (extremely) rigorous in quantitative analyses, inference, and decision making processes, which is recognized in my field and have established my independent research programs and also do collaborate with many people in the US and internationally. My PhD program is quite unusual; in addition to independent phd research, my lab. experience under my supervisor, as a lab manager/leader is an intensive startup-ish. Since I become a faculty member, my lab is like a small boutique collaborating with other boutiques.
My hobby is to watch finance markets; I have done this over 10 years. I can read economy and think about policy stakeholders’ behaviors and have been quite good at guessing how our future will move forward. This hobby is related to my job as well; crafting my skills in how to make a societal impact through my research and communications (environmental and health protection is not easy); so I have very curiosity about many things in micro and macro scales.
Any info would be very helpful and highly appreciated.
Thank you in advance!

I just got the invite as well to a R2 for the NYC office and was sent the order book pdf. Was that the same thing? Would love some insight and perhaps any comparisons between R1.

This is very strange. I have a physics phd from an R1 university. But I don't think anyone would have viewed me negatively if I had asked for a letter to interview at a finance company during grad school or in my undergrad. To me sounds like an issue with your college/university. Yes professors spend time trying to grow a student into a good researcher but even so there is no guarantee or expectation on the outcome. The only expectation is that you're honest about your goals and you're putting in effort into the projects you're working on. I've literally had an undergrad in my research group drop physics research altogether and become a lawyer. My advisor did everything he could to support his career choice.
